In a stunning development that has rocked the NHL world, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar has officially rejected and terminated a proposed $55.8 million contract arrangement that would have involved Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner, sources confirmed Thursday morning.

According to insiders close to the negotiation, the deal was part of a complex trade-and-sign scenario that would have seen Marner join the Avalanche while Makar was reportedly poised for an extended commitment under new financial terms. However, Makar, 26, abruptly walked away from the table, leaving the blockbuster proposal in limbo.

“After careful consideration, Cale has decided not to move forward with the deal,” said Makar’s agent in a brief statement. “His focus remains on winning another Stanley Cup with the Avalanche.”

While details remain scarce, league executives suggest the deal would have marked one of the most financially significant trades in recent NHL history. The now-defunct agreement reportedly included multi-year commitments and major cap adjustments for both franchises.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche have yet to issue official comments.

This latest development raises fresh questions about Marner’s future in Toronto, as trade rumors continue to swirl amid salary cap concerns and a desire for roster shake-ups.
