In an unexpected and heartwarming gesture, Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar sent an appreciation gift to the Edmonton Oilers organization earlier this week following the official contract signing of former Avalanche assistant coach Nolan Pratt, who has been named as an associate coach in Edmonton.

The move, while surprising to some, underscores the camaraderie and respect that still exists among NHL coaching circles — even amid the high-stakes competition of professional hockey.

A Thoughtful Gesture

According to sources close to both teams, the gift from Bednar included a personalized jersey, a framed photo montage of memorable moments with Pratt during his tenure in Colorado, and a handwritten note wishing him success in his new chapter.

The jersey was reportedly a custom Oilers sweater with “PRATT” emblazoned on the back and the number 22, a nod to the year Pratt joined the Avalanche’s coaching staff full-time. It also included the message “Once an Av, always an Av” stitched inside the collar — a detail that has touched many within the Avalanche organization.

The framed photo montage featured behind-the-scenes moments from the Avalanche’s 2022 Stanley Cup run, as well as shots of Pratt during practices and strategy sessions, showcasing the tight bond he developed with both players and coaches.

A Note That Said It All

While the full contents of the note have not been made public, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed during a post-practice media availability that the message was “genuine, heartfelt, and deeply respectful.”

“Coach Bednar showed what real leadership looks like,” Knoblauch said. “He wasn’t just saying goodbye to a colleague; he was honoring a friendship and a professional relationship that helped build something special in Colorado.”

Nolan Pratt: A Rising Star in Coaching

Pratt, who served as a defensive assistant coach under Bednar for seven seasons, is widely respected around the league for his calm demeanor, sharp tactical mind, and player-first approach. His work with Colorado’s blue line was instrumental in developing the team’s elite defensive core — including stars like Cale Makar, Devon Toews, and Bowen Byram.

His move to Edmonton marks a major step forward in his coaching career. The Oilers, fresh off a deep playoff run last season, are bolstering their staff in an effort to maintain momentum heading into the 2025–26 campaign. Insiders suggest Pratt could be in line for a head coaching position within the next few seasons, and this new role will give him increased responsibility in game planning and player development.

Respect Over Rivalry

While the Avalanche and Oilers have battled fiercely in recent playoff matchups — including a memorable Western Conference Final in 2022 — the bond between the two organizations has quietly strengthened behind the scenes. Bednar’s gift is being seen by many as a sign of growing professionalism and unity across the league.

“He didn’t have to do that,” said an unnamed Oilers staff member. “But that’s the kind of person Bednar is. He leads with character.”

Reactions Across the League

News of the gift has sparked a wave of admiration from fans and fellow coaches alike. Social media platforms lit up with praise for Bednar’s classy move.

“Jared Bednar proves again why he’s one of the most respected coaches in hockey. Pure class.”
