  • In a major development for AFL fans, legendary coach Mick Malthouse has officially joined the commentary ranks, bringing his vast football knowledge and no-nonsense style to the media box. Malthouse, best known for his premiership success with Collingwood, wasted no time offering his insights — particularly on the current state of the Magpies.

Speaking during his first live appearance as a commentator, Malthouse pulled no punches when discussing Collingwood’s recent performances. While praising the team’s intensity and emerging talent, he also expressed concern over consistency and decision-making under pressure.

“The effort is there — that’s not in question,” Malthouse said. “But effort alone doesn’t win games. You need smart ball use, structure, and discipline, especially in tight contests. That’s where I think they’ve been off the mark this season.”

The 70-year-old AFL Hall of Famer, who coached Collingwood to the 2010 premiership and led them to three consecutive Grand Finals, remains a revered figure at the club. His return to the public football conversation is seen as a welcome voice of experience at a time when the Magpies are navigating a transition period with a younger list and growing expectations.

When asked about coach Craig McRae’s direction, Malthouse was measured but supportive.

“I like what Craig is building. The players clearly buy into his philosophy, and that’s crucial. But with youth comes inconsistency — it’s all part of the process.”

Malthouse’s commentary debut also touched on broader AFL issues, including the state of umpiring, the impact of mid-season rule tweaks, and the evolution of game plans across the league. Fans can expect more of his sharp football intellect and trademark honesty in future broadcasts.

As the season heats up, Collingwood’s performance will remain under close scrutiny — and now, with Malthouse in the commentary box, those insights are bound to be both pointed and compelling.
