The report, which was obtained by The Herald Sun late last night, contains scathing commentary on Collingwood’s internal culture, training standards, and player management strategies—particularly those implemented under McRae’s leadership since taking over in 2022.
Harvey, who briefly served as interim coach in 2021, outlined what he described as “a slow unraveling of key on-field disciplines and an overemphasis on emotional leadership over tactical evolution.” While the report did commend McRae for restoring morale and unity among players in the wake of a turbulent 2021 season, it questioned whether the current coaching panel has what it takes to maintain long-term premiership competitiveness.
When approached outside the AIA Centre this morning, McRae appeared visibly shaken but composed. “I’m shocked, to be honest,” he told reporters. “I’ve always had immense respect for Robert [Harvey], both as a former coach and a club legend. I didn’t see this coming.”
Sources within the club say senior players are “rattled” but are standing behind McRae, who led the team to an inspirational Grand Final win in 2023. One veteran player, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, “There’s definitely a sense of betrayal. Harvey was part of this club for decades. To air this in public—it’s heavy.”
Harvey, now working in media and occasionally consulting with other AFL clubs, has yet to comment publicly beyond a brief statement defending his intentions: “My report was never meant to be personal or destructive. It was a professional analysis requested during a confidential AFL club development review process.”
AFL House has confirmed that the report was initially intended for internal review only but was leaked by an unnamed source late Tuesday evening.
With the 2025 season entering a crucial mid-phase and Collingwood sitting just inside the top eight, the timing couldn’t be worse for the reigning premiers.
Club President Jeff Browne issued a formal statement this afternoon: “We stand by Craig McRae and his coaching team. Any concerns raised will be addressed appropriately and internally. Our focus remains on the upcoming Anzac Day clash.”
