In a powerful act of community leadership and compassion, Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star Donovan Mitchell has announced a $7.5 million personal investment to convert a historic Cleveland property into a state-of-the-art shelter and support center for homeless youth.

The facility, which will be named Spida’s Haven, in honor of Mitchell’s nickname, will provide transitional housing, mental health services, career training, education support, and mentorship programs for at-risk and unhoused youth in Northeast Ohio.

“This city has embraced me like family,” Mitchell said during a press conference outside the 1920s-era home he purchased for the project. “I want this to be more than just a place to sleep — I want it to be a place where young people rediscover hope, build their future, and know they’re not forgotten.”

Mitchell partnered with local nonprofits, mental health professionals, and city officials to ensure the facility addresses both immediate needs and long-term empowerment. Renovations are already underway, with plans to open the shelter in early 2026.

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb praised the move, calling it “a transformative investment in Cleveland’s future” and “an example of what leadership looks like off the court.”

Mitchell, a four-time NBA All-Star, has long been involved in philanthropic efforts, but this marks his most ambitious initiative to date. The move comes amid rising concerns about youth homelessness in urban centers across America.

Social media has exploded with praise for the Cavaliers star, with fans and advocates hailing his commitment to meaningful, lasting change.
