In a landmark act of generosity, Buffalo Sabres forward **Jeff Skinner** has donated **\$7.4 million** to support **youth mental health programs and accessible sports initiatives** across Western New York, marking one of the largest personal donations by a professional athlete in the region’s history.
The donation, made through the newly established **Skinner Strong Foundation**, will be distributed among several key organizations including **Kaleida Health’s Oishei Children’s Hospital**, **Buffalo Public Schools**, and **local youth hockey development programs**. The funds aim to expand mental health services in schools, provide free counseling for underserved communities, and increase access to sports for low-income families.
“A Cause Close to My Heart”
In a press conference held at LECOM Harborcenter, Skinner, 33, expressed his deep commitment to mental health awareness and youth development.
“As athletes, we talk a lot about physical strength, but mental health is just as important — especially for young people. I’ve seen firsthand how pressure and lack of resources can affect kids. I wanted to do something meaningful for the community that has supported me through my career,” Skinner said.
The initiative comes amid a growing movement in the NHL and other major sports leagues to address mental health, reduce stigma, and promote athlete well-being both on and off the ice.
Community Impact
The **\$7.4 million** pledge will be allocated as follows:
* **\$3 million** to Oishei Children’s Hospital for expanding pediatric mental health services and opening a new outpatient clinic.
* **\$2 million** to Buffalo Public Schools to hire trained mental health counselors and offer trauma-informed training for educators.
\$1.5 million** for the creation of “Ice Access for All,” a grant and equipment program for youth hockey players from marginalized communities.
\$900,000** reserved for emergency youth support services, including suicide prevention programs and 24/7 hotlines.
Dr. Alicia Raymond, Director of Child Psychiatry at Oishei, said the donation will have “a generational impact.”
“This is more than charity — it’s an investment in the future of Buffalo’s kids,” she said.. Teammates and Fans React
