In a monumental announcement that has sent shockwaves through the baseball world, Toronto Blue Jays President and CEO Mark Shapiro has confirmed that Hall of Famer and franchise legend Roberto Alomar is officially returning to the organization — this time, not as a player, but as a co-owner.
Joined by members of the Alomar family at a special press conference at Rogers Centre, Shapiro called the move a “historic full-circle moment” for the club and its fans.
“Robbie is Blue Jays royalty. His passion for the game, this city, and our franchise is unmatched,” said Shapiro. “We’re beyond thrilled to welcome him back in a leadership role that will help shape the next era of Blue Jays baseball.”
Alomar, who played for the Blue Jays from 1991 to 1995, was instrumental in leading the team to back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. Known for his iconic defense and clutch hitting, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011 and was the first player to enter Cooperstown wearing a Blue Jays cap.
Though Alomar had previously parted ways with Major League Baseball due to off-field controversies, this return signals a fresh start — and a significant personal and professional evolution for the former All-Star.
“Toronto has always been home to me,” Alomar said. “This opportunity is bigger than baseball. It’s about community, legacy, and building a future that honours the past while looking ahead.”
The full scope of Alomar’s ownership role is expected to include player development initiatives, Latin American scouting expansion, and community outreach programs across Canada and Puerto Rico.
Fans can expect to see more of the Alomar name around the Rogers Centre starting with the 2025 season — and this time, in the front office.
