In a move that’s turning heads across the NBA, the Indiana Pacers have officially signed former head coach Frank Vogel to a bold two-year contract, marking a dramatic return to the franchise where he first made his name as a head coach.
Vogel, 52, is no stranger to Indiana fans. He previously served as the Pacers’ head coach from 2011 to 2016, leading the team to multiple playoff appearances, including two consecutive Eastern Conference Finals in 2013 and 2014. His defensive-minded coaching style and steady leadership helped define a gritty Pacers identity during the post-Reggie Miller era.
The decision to bring Vogel back signals a shift in the Pacers’ approach as the franchise looks to capitalize on its promising young core, led by All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton and standout forward Bennedict Mathurin. After a first-round playoff exit in 2025 under Rick Carlisle—who stepped down earlier this summer—Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard made it clear the team was looking for a coach with a proven postseason pedigree and a commitment to defense.
“Frank knows what it takes to win in Indiana,” said Pritchard in a press conference Monday afternoon. “His track record speaks for itself, and his familiarity with our culture made this an easy decision.”
Vogel most recently coached the Phoenix Suns during the 2023-2024 season before being let go after a disappointing playoff run. However, he remains widely respected around the league, having also won an NBA Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.
A Second Chapter in Indiana
In his first stint with the Pacers, Vogel compiled a 250–181 regular-season record. His defensive systems routinely ranked among the top in the league, with the team anchored by former stars like Paul George, Roy Hibbert, and David West. Analysts believe his return could help shore up Indiana’s current defensive shortcomings, especially in transition and late-game situations.
“Indiana’s young roster needs structure and accountability,” said NBA analyst and former coach Jalen Rose. “Frank Vogel brings both. This could be the move that gets them out of the middle of the pack.”
Bold or Brilliant?
While many see Vogel’s hiring as a smart reunion, some critics are questioning the short length of the contract. A two-year deal indicates the Pacers are seeking immediate impact while keeping long-term flexibility. It’s a bold gamble in a competitive Eastern Conference that features powerhouses like Boston, Milwaukee, and New York.
Still, Vogel seems unfazed.
“I’m honored to be back in Indiana,” Vogel said during his official introduction. “This organization gave me my first shot, and I’m here to help bring playoff basketball—and eventually a championship—back to this city.”
With training camp just around the corner, fans won’t have to wait long to see how this high-stakes reunion plays out. One thing is clear: the Pacers are no longer content with rebuilding. They’re aiming to contend—and they’re betting on a familiar face to lead the charge.
