In a surprising and emotional turn of events, Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd has officially submitted his resignation letter, stepping down from his position effective immediately. The letter was delivered this morning to team owners Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont, marking the end of Kidd’s latest chapter with the franchise.

Sources close to the organization confirmed the resignation comes after “lengthy reflection” and “personal considerations.” Kidd, who helped guide the Mavericks to multiple playoff appearances and played a crucial role in the development of star guard Luka Dončić, explained in his statement that the decision was “one of the hardest of [his] professional life.”

“My time with the Mavericks has been one of the most meaningful journeys of my basketball career,” Kidd wrote. “I am deeply grateful to the players, staff, and fans for their belief in me. However, after much thought, I believe now is the right time to step away and prioritize my family, my health, and the next phase of my life.”

Kidd’s departure leaves the Mavericks in a critical transition period, especially with the 2025-26 NBA season looming. Assistant coaches and front office leaders are reportedly already discussing interim options, with a formal announcement expected in the coming days.

Kidd, a Hall of Fame point guard and former NBA champion, originally returned to Dallas as head coach in 2021. His tenure has seen highs and lows, including a Western Conference Finals appearance and a renewed identity for the franchise.

The Mavericks organization released a brief statement, thanking Kidd for his leadership and dedication:

“Jason Kidd will always be part of the Mavericks family. We respect his decision and wish him the very best in all future endeavors.”
