TD Garden erupted with cheers and emotion today as one of the most iconic figures in Boston Celtics history, Bob Cousy, made a triumphant return to the franchise — this time not as a player, but as the newly appointed Special Advisor to Basketball Operations.

At 96 years old, Cousy remains one of the most respected names in NBA history. The Hall of Fame point guard, affectionately known as “The Houdini of the Hardwood,” played his entire career with the Celtics from 1950 to 1963, leading the team to six NBA championships and revolutionizing the position with his dazzling passing and court vision.

Today, his return marks not only a symbolic homecoming but also a powerful reconnection between the Celtics’ glorious past and their bright future.

“It is an incredible honor to welcome Mr. Bob Cousy back to the Celtics family in an official capacity,” said Celtics president Brad Stevens during a press conference held at center court. “His basketball knowledge, leadership, and commitment to excellence will be invaluable to our organization and our young core.”

Cousy’s role as Special Advisor will involve mentoring players, providing input on player development, and offering guidance to the front office on building a championship culture — something he helped establish during the Celtics’ golden era alongside the late Bill Russell.

“The Celtics have always been in my blood,” Cousy said, visibly emotional as he addressed the roaring crowd. “I’ve never stopped believing in this organization. It’s a joy to come back and contribute in any way I can to help bring another banner to the rafters.”

Fans inside TD Garden gave Cousy a standing ovation, chanting his name and waving signs that read “Welcome Home, Cooz!” and “Legend Forever.”

Former and current Celtics players also took to social media to express their excitement. Celtics forward Jayson Tatum tweeted, “What an honor to have the 🐐 back with us. Can’t wait to learn from the legend himseslf.
