In a remarkable show of compassion and community leadership, University of Kentucky basketball standout Anthony Thompson has announced a $7.5 million personal investment to convert a historic Lexington estate into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The shelter, set to be named “Thompson House”, will provide housing, counseling, educational resources, and career training for young people experiencing homelessness in the Bluegrass region. The facility will have space for over 60 residents, offering both short-term support and long-term transitional programs.
“I’ve been blessed with a platform, and it’s my responsibility to use it,” Thompson said at a press conference earlier today. “No kid should have to worry about where they’ll sleep tonight. Lexington is my home, and I want to be part of the solution.”
Thompson, just 20 years old and already drawing NBA attention for his on-court performance, is being widely praised for his off-court vision. Local leaders, including Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, called the move “a game-changing act of generosity.”
Construction on Thompson House is expected to begin this fall, with doors opening by late 2026.
