In a monumental announcement that has sent shockwaves through the NHL community, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has confirmed that Mario Lemieux, the legendary Hall of Fame center and one of the most iconic figures in ice hockey history, will return to the Pittsburgh Penguins organization in 2025 as a co-owner.
Lemieux, who previously held ownership of the team from 1999 until the FSG acquisition in 2021, is widely credited with not only saving the franchise from bankruptcy but also building a championship legacy in Pittsburgh. Now, after a four-year absence from the ownership suite, “Le Magnifique” is coming home.
“This is an extraordinary moment for our organization,” said FSG Chairman Tom Werner. “Mario Lemieux is synonymous with the Penguins, and having him return as a co-owner strengthens our commitment to excellence both on and off the ice.”
Sources indicate Lemieux will take on a significant leadership role within the franchise, with influence over player development, organizational culture, and community outreach initiatives. His return is already being celebrated by fans, many of whom consider Lemieux the heart and soul of Pittsburgh hockey.
Lemieux released a statement, saying:
“The Penguins have always been a part of my family, and I’m thrilled to once again play a direct role in shaping the future of this incredible franchise. Pittsburgh is home.”
