In a surprising development, Adams Foote has officially resigned from his position as Assistant Coach of the Vancouver Canucks, the team confirmed early Thursday morning.
Foote, who joined the Canucks coaching staff in 2023 under Head Coach Rick Tocchet, cited “personal reasons” for stepping down. The team released a brief statement acknowledging the resignation and expressing gratitude for Foote’s contributions during his tenure.
“We thank Adams for his dedication and professionalism over the past two seasons,” said General Manager Patrik Allvin. “His leadership and experience were valuable assets to our coaching group. We support his decision and wish him all the best.”
Foote, 54, a former Stanley Cup-winning defenseman and veteran of over 1,100 NHL games, was brought in to help develop the Canucks’ young blue line, especially in defensive structure and penalty killing. Under his guidance, Vancouver showed marked improvement in its defensive zone play, climbing from 28th in goals against in the 2022–23 season to 14th in 2024–25.
Although the specific nature of his personal reasons has not been disclosed, sources close to the team indicate that Foote had been considering stepping away from hockey for several weeks. Reports suggest family commitments and health considerations played a role in the decision.
The timing of the resignation comes just ahead of the Canucks’ development camp, which begins next week. The team has not yet named a replacement.
