In a surprising turn of events, New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau has announced that he will be continuing in his role for the upcoming 2025–26 NBA season, despite widespread speculation that he would be stepping down following the team’s early playoff exit.
During a press conference held at Madison Square Garden this morning, Thibodeau addressed the swirling rumors about his future with the franchise.
“There’s been a lot of talk out there,” Thibodeau said. “But I’m here to say — I’m not going anywhere. I believe in this team, and we’ve got unfinished business.”
The announcement comes after weeks of uncertainty following the Knicks’ disappointing second-round elimination by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Reports had suggested growing tensions between Thibodeau and the front office, as well as some players expressing frustration with his rigid coaching style.
However, team president Leon Rose also made an appearance at the press conference, throwing full support behind the veteran coach.
“We trust Tom’s leadership,” Rose said. “This organization is building something sustainable, and he’s a critical part of that vision.”
Thibodeau, who has coached the Knicks since 2020, led the team to three playoff appearances in the last five seasons. Though known for his defensive systems and demanding practices, his ability to build a winning culture has earned both praise and criticism.
Fans and analysts had speculated that New York might pursue a younger coach or someone with a more offensive-minded approach. But today’s announcement signals continuity in the franchise’s direction.
Knicks star Jalen Brunson took to social media shortly after the press conference, tweeting:
