In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through the NBA, Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla has been suspended indefinitely and sentenced to eight years in prison, following the conclusion of a months-long federal investigation.

Federal Charges Unsealed

The Department of Justice released a statement this morning confirming that Mazzulla was convicted on multiple counts, including financial misconduct, obstruction of justice, and tampering with official documents related to team operations during the 2023–2024 NBA season.

“The charges reflect a serious breach of both legal and professional standards,” said U.S. Attorney Linda Raynor. “No one is above the law—not even in the NBA.”

Celtics Organization Reacts Swiftly

The Boston Celtics released a brief statement:

“We are aware of the legal developments involving Head Coach Joe Mazzulla. Effective immediately, he has been suspended indefinitely without pay. The organization takes these matters seriously and is fully cooperating with authorities.”

The team also announced that Assistant Coach Sam Cassell will step in as interim head coach, effective immediately.

Sam Cassell Takes the Helm

Cassell, a former NBA champion and veteran assistant coach, addressed the media this afternoon.

“This is not how anyone wanted the season to go,” Cassell said. “But I’m committed to guiding this team with integrity and focus while we move forward.”

Cassell has received strong support from players and staff, many of whom expressed shock but trust in his leadership.

NBA Launches Independent Review

In response to the ruling, the NBA has launched its own investigation into the matter and potential systemic issues within team management. Commissioner Adam Silver issued the following:

“This is an unprecedented situation. We will ensure that due process is followed while maintaining the integrity of the league.”

What’s Next for the Celtics?

Despite the off-court turmoil, the Celtics are expected to continue their offseason preparations. With training camp approaching in less than two months, the front office is expected to evaluate long-term coaching plans while focusing on damage control.

Mazzulla’s legal team has already filed a notice of appeal. If upheld, his sentence would make him the first active head coach in NBA history to serve prison time during his tenure.
