Roberts, who guided the Dodgers to multiple playoff appearances and a long-awaited World Series championship in 2020, was more than just a baseball figure — he was a symbol of resilience, optimism, and grace under pressure. His impact extended far beyond the dugout, serving as a mentor, advocate, and role model throughout his career.
Born in Naha, Okinawa, Japan, to a Japanese mother and African American father, Roberts moved to California at a young age. His multicultural background and deep connection to community issues made him a unique and influential figure in American sports. After a decade-long playing career, which included a key role in the Boston Red Sox’s 2004 championship run — particularly his iconic stolen base in Game 4 of the ALCS — Roberts transitioned into coaching and front-office roles before being named the Dodgers’ manager in 2015.
Under his leadership, the Dodgers became a dominant force in the National League, praised for their disciplined play, analytical strategy, and cohesive team culture. Roberts’ calm demeanor and sharp baseball mind made him one of the most respected managers in the league.
News of his passing has sent shockwaves throughout the sports world. Tributes from players, former teammates, and fellow managers poured in, remembering Roberts as not only a brilliant strategist but also a compassionate leader and cherished friend.
“Dodger Blue will never be the same,” said longtime Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw. “Dave wasn’t just our manager — he was family. He believed in all of us, and that belief made us better.”
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred also released a statement, calling Roberts “a trailblazer in the sport” and “an inspiration to many young athletes across the country.”
Though his life was cut tragically short, Dave Roberts’ legacy is secure. He broke barriers, brought people together, and reminded everyone that sports, at its best, is about heart, perseverance, and unity.
He is survived by his wife, Tricia, and their two children. Plans for a memorial are expected to be announced by the Dodgers organization in the coming days.
Rest in peace, Coach Roberts. You touched down in the lives of many — and your impact will never be forgotten.
