As the Milwaukee Bucks prepare for a pivotal stretch in their season, head coach Doc Rivers is placing a renewed emphasis on defensive execution and team cohesion ahead of their upcoming back-to-back matchups against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Speaking to reporters during Saturday’s post-practice media availability, Rivers acknowledged the need for critical adjustments following recent inconsistencies in the Bucks’ performance, particularly on the defensive end.
“We’ve got to tighten things up,” Rivers said. “The Clippers are one of the most dynamic teams in the West. They’ve got scoring threats at every position, and if we’re not locked in defensively, they’ll make us pay.”
The Bucks, who are currently navigating a challenging road trip, have struggled with transition defense and late-game execution in recent outings. Rivers pointed to communication breakdowns and lapses in defensive rotations as areas of concern.
“When we’re talking and connected, we can be one of the best defenses in the league,” Rivers noted. “But when we have those 2-3 minute stretches where we fall asleep, teams like L.A. will capitalize.”
Rivers also hinted at potential lineup tweaks and a more deliberate offensive pace to counter the Clippers’ aggressive perimeter defense. With stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard expected to shoulder the bulk of the offensive load, Rivers emphasized the importance of complementary contributions from the bench.
“We need more consistency from the second unit,” he said. “Guys like Portis, Beasley, and Connaughton – their energy and shot-making are going to be key.”
The upcoming games will also serve as a reunion of sorts, as Rivers faces his former team. He coached the Clippers from 2013 to 2020, leading them to multiple playoff appearances.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for that organization,” Rivers said. “But right now, my focus is 100% on getting this team where it needs to be.”
With playoff positioning beginning to take shape, the Bucks are viewing these matchups as an early postseason test. Rivers, a seasoned tactician with an NBA championship under his belt, knows exactly what’s at stake.
“We’re not where we want to be yet, but these are the kind of games that help define your identity. We’ll be ready.”
The Bucks face the Clippers in a two-game mini-series starting Monday night in Los Angeles, followed by a rematch on Wednesday.
