The scheduled football game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Oklahoma Sooners was canceled due to Oklahoma’s upcoming transition to the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The original home-and-home series was set to begin with Georgia visiting Oklahoma in 2023. However, with Oklahoma joining the SEC, the conference decided to cancel the series to avoid potential scheduling conflicts and ensure fairness in future matchups.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey explained that the decision aimed to prevent situations where one team would have an advantage in home games during the transition period. He acknowledged the complexities involved and took responsibility for the cancellation, emphasizing that it was in the best interest of the conference and its member institutions.
As a result, Georgia had to adjust its 2023 schedule to accommodate the change. While the cancellation disrupted the original plans, fans can look forward to regular matchups between Georgia and Oklahoma once the Sooners officially join the SEC.
