In a stunning move that could reshape the Eastern Conference landscape, the Indiana Pacers have acquired All-Star point guard Fred VanVleet in a blockbuster three-team trade involving the Toronto Raptors and the Charlotte Hornets.

The deal, finalized early Thursday morning, sends VanVleet to Indiana in exchange for a package including Andrew Nembhard, multiple future first-round picks, and veteran forward Buddy Hield, who is being rerouted to Charlotte as part of the salary maneuvering.

Full Trade Details:

Pacers receive: Fred VanVleet

Raptors receive: Andrew Nembhard, 2027 first-round pick (unprotected), 2029 first-round pick (top-3 protected)

Hornets receive: Buddy Hield, 2026 second-round pick (via Indiana)

VanVleet, 31, is coming off a strong season with the Raptors where he averaged 19.4 points, 7.2 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. Known for his leadership, clutch shooting, and playoff experience, VanVleet gives the Pacers a true floor general to pair with rising star Tyrese Haliburton — forming what may be one of the East’s most dynamic backcourts.

Reaction Around the League

“This is a win-now move for Indiana,” said ESPN analyst Zach Lowe. “They’ve got a young core and now add a proven winner in Fred VanVleet. This signals they’re ready to compete with Boston, Milwaukee, and New York.”

Toronto, meanwhile, continues to stockpile assets amid what appears to be a full-fledged rebuild. Nembhard, 25, has shown flashes of elite playmaking and perimeter defense, while the draft capital provides long-term flexibility.

Charlotte benefits as well, taking a low-risk swing on Hield, who still offers elite 3-point shooting and could be a valuable trade chip at the deadline.

What’s Next for the Pacers?

With Haliburton, VanVleet, Bennedict Mathurin, and Myles Turner all under contract, the Pacers are now seen as a serious threat in the East — and potentially just one more piece away from title contention.

“We believe Fred can help us take the next step,” said Pacers GM Chad Buchanan. “His leadership on and off the court fits perfectly with our culture and vision.”
