Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog has donated his entire $18.9 million in performance bonuses and sponsorship earnings to a homeless shelter in Mattstedt, Germany, marking one of the most generous personal contributions by a professional athlete this year.

The donation will directly support 150 homeless families, providing housing, food, medical assistance, and job training opportunities. The Mattstedt shelter, located in the Thuringia region, has long struggled with limited resources amid a growing local housing crisis.

Landeskog, whose mother is German and has family ties in the area, said the cause was deeply personal.

“I’ve been fortunate in my career,” Landeskog said in a statement. “This is about giving back to a community that means a lot to me—and making a real impact in people’s lives.”

Shelter officials said the funds will be used to renovate and expand the facility, add social services, and create long-term support programs for vulnerable families.

The gesture has drawn widespread praise across both the sports and humanitarian communities. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman called it “a powerful example of leadership, empathy, and global responsibility.”

Landeskog, who led the Avalanche to multiple playoff runs and a Stanley Cup title, continues to build a legacy both on and off the ice.
