BREAKING NEWS: Netflix Releases “The UnderDog”, a Highly Anticipated Documentary About Buffalo sabre legend Gilbert Perreault slated for Release on….
Netflix has just announced the official release date for “The UnderDog,” a powerful new documentary chronicling the life and career of Buffalo Sabres legend Gilbert Perreault. The film will premiere exclusively on the streaming platform on July 15, 2025.
Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Laura McGrath (Legacy on Ice), “The UnderDog” promises a never-before-seen look at one of the NHL’s most graceful and underrated superstars. With rare archival footage, in-depth interviews, and personal stories from teammates, family, and Perreault himself, the documentary paints an intimate portrait of a player who defined an era for the Sabres franchise.
Perreault, the first-ever draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 1970, dazzled fans with his electrifying skill and led the famed “French Connection” line. Despite his hall-of-fame career and nine All-Star appearances, Perreault often flew under the radar compared to his contemporaries—an “underdog” in the spotlight of hockey history.
“This is more than a sports story,” said McGrath in a press release. “It’s about perseverance, loyalty, and how a quiet superstar became the heartbeat of a city.”
Fans and critics alike have been buzzing on social media since Netflix dropped the teaser trailer earlier this week. Early reviews from industry insiders suggest the film could be a major contender for awards season.
“The UnderDog” will be available to stream globally on Netflix starting July 15
