Denver, CO – Denver Broncos Pro Bowl cornerback Pat Surtain II made headlines Tuesday morning—not for a highlight-reel interception, but for a deeply personal and generous gesture in honor of Father’s Day.
Appearing on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football alongside his father, former NFL player and coach Patrick Surtain Sr., the younger Surtain shared reflections on their father-son relationship and growing up in a football family. But what happened next took everyone by surprise.
In a moment that stunned both the hosts and viewers, Surtain announced he had paid the medical bills for 25 male cancer patients currently undergoing treatment at a local Denver hospital—most of whom are fathers or serve as father figures in their families.
“These men are fighting every day, not just for their lives but for their families,” Surtain said on air. “I wanted them to feel seen, celebrated, and supported—not just as patients, but as dads.”
Each man also received a personalized Father’s Day care package, including Broncos merchandise, handwritten notes from both Pat and his father, and a message of encouragement.
Patrick Surtain Sr., who spent 11 seasons in the NFL and now coaches high school football in Florida, spoke with emotion about the pride he feels watching his son’s growth—on and off the field.
“This right here, this is the stuff that matters,” said Surtain Sr. “To see him lead with compassion—it’s bigger than football.”
The gesture, which was kept under wraps until the morning show, has since gone viral across social media, with fans and fellow players praising Surtain for using his platform to spotlight unsung heroes.
As Father’s Day approaches, the Surtains’ message is clear: fatherhood is about presence, perseverance, and love—and those who embody that deserve to be honored in every possible way.
