Edmonton police have announced temporary road closures and an increased security presence following all Edmonton Oilers home games at Rogers Place. This initiative aims to enhance public safety, manage traffic flow, and ensure a positive experience for fans attending events in the ICE District.
In anticipation of large crowds and to facilitate crowd control, the City of Edmonton has implemented “no stopping zones” during Oilers games. These zones are active from 7 p.m. to midnight on specific downtown streets, including:
Whyte Avenue between 109 Street and Gateway Boulevard
Jasper Avenue between 109 Street and 97 Street
Vehicles parked or stopped within these zones will be ticketed and towed to ensure smooth traffic flow and pedestrian safety .
To address concerns about public safety, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has increased its presence around Rogers Place during and after Oilers home games. This decision follows incidents of violence and crowd-related disturbances in previous events. EPS Chief Dale McFee emphasized that while most fans are respectful, additional officers are necessary to manage the larger crowds and ensure safety .
In addition to traffic and security measures, Rogers Place has introduced advanced screening technology to expedite fan entry. The new system, powered by Evolv Express, uses artificial intelligence to differentiate between potential security threats and everyday items, reducing the need for fans to empty their pockets or use bins. This upgrade aims to enhance both security and the overall fan experience .
For real-time updates on road closures and traffic disruptions, fans are encouraged to consult the City of Edmonton’s Special Event Road Closures and Current Traffic Disruptions pages. These resources provide interactive maps and information to help plan commutes around game times.
By adhering to these measures, Edmonton aims to ensure that attending an Oilers game is a safe and enjoyable experience for all
