In a surprising development on the NHL coaching carousel, multiple sources report that former NHL head coach Glen Gulutzan has been interviewed by both the Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars for their current head coaching vacancies.
Gulutzan, 53, brings a wealth of coaching experience at both the NHL and AHL levels. He previously served as head coach of the Calgary Flames from 2016 to 2018 and the Dallas Stars from 2011 to 2013. More recently, he was an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers under Dave Tippett and Jay Woodcroft before being let go in 2023.
According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, both teams are conducting “extensive due diligence,” and Gulutzan is considered a serious candidate, particularly in Edmonton, where his familiarity with the core group and organizational structure is seen as a plus.
“Gulutzan is known for his detailed approach to systems and special teams,” one NHL executive told reporters. “He connects well with younger players and understands the modern game.”
Both the Oilers and Stars are in critical off-season phases, each looking to stabilize their benches after falling short of Stanley Cup aspirations. Edmonton parted ways with Kris Knoblauch after a disappointing playoff exit in June, while Dallas saw Pete DeBoer mutually part ways with the organization just days ago.
Gulutzan’s prior tenure with the Stars, where he began his NHL head coaching career, adds an intriguing twist to the story. Despite mixed results in his first stint, Dallas appears willing to revisit the possibility of reuniting with him, perhaps in a more evolved capacity.
