In a monumental gesture of community support, NBA superstar Kevin Durant has donated $5.7 million toward the reconstruction and creation of a state-of-the-art youth sports complex in the heart of Phoenix. The donation, announced earlier today, is one of the largest charitable contributions ever made by a professional athlete to the city.
The complex, to be named “The Durant Center for Youth Athletics,” will be built on the grounds of a former rundown recreation site on the city’s south side. Plans include multiple indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a turf soccer field, an Olympic-size swimming pool, classrooms, and wellness spaces offering mentorship and mental health programs for underserved youth.
Durant, known for his philanthropy through the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation, emphasized his commitment to giving back to communities that inspire and support the next generation.
Phoenix welcomed me with open arms,” Durant said during a press conference. “This city is full of talented, driven young people who just need the right opportunities. I want this center to be a place where they can dream big and work hard to make those dreams real.”
City officials praised the donation, with Mayor Kate Gallego calling it “a transformative investment” that will “positively impact thousands of families for years to come.” Construction is set to begin in late summer, with a projected opening date in fall 2026.
The Durant Center will also partner with local schools and nonprofits to provide academic tutoring, college prep resources, and nutrition programs.
As Durant continues to make headlines on the court with the Phoenix Suns, this off-court move cements his legacy as more than a basketball legend — but as a changemaker in the community.
