A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the Duke University community today after a massive fire and explosion partially destroyed Cameron Indoor Stadium, the historic home of the Duke Blue Devils basketball programs. The incident claimed the lives of six individuals, including two current top all-star players and four legendary figures in Blue Devils basketball — among them, former women’s basketball head coach Kara Lawson.
Emergency services rushed to the scene around 9:15 a.m. following reports of a large explosion and smoke billowing from the north section of the stadium. Firefighters and first responders battled the blaze for several hours, managing to contain it before it could spread to the rest of the Duke Athletics complex. However, extensive damage has been reported in the training and administrative wings of the building.
University officials confirmed the deaths in a somber press briefing. The names of the victims, aside from Coach Lawson, have not yet been publicly released pending family notifications. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion, with early reports indicating a possible electrical malfunction leading to a gas line ignition.
“This is a devastating day for Duke, for college basketball, and for everyone who knew these extraordinary individuals,” said Duke University President Vincent Price. “We are grieving alongside their families, teammates, and fans across the world.”
Kara Lawson, a beloved coach, broadcaster, and former WNBA player, was widely respected for her leadership and passion for the game. Tributes have already begun pouring in from across the sports world in her honor.
All university athletic events have been postponed, and a candlelight vigil is planned for this evening on campus as the community begins to mourn and honor those lost.
