In a surprising twist that has rocked the Collingwood Football Club, current head coach Craig McRae was left stunned after a posthumously released report, attributed to legendary former coach Jock McHale, revealed harsh criticisms and bold insights into the club’s modern-day direction.
The historic report — compiled from previously unpublished writings and notes by McHale — was recently uncovered during an archival project and made public by the AFL. In it, McHale, widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in Collingwood’s storied history, expressed concerns about maintaining the club’s “traditional toughness, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the jumper.”
Sources say McRae, who has led the Magpies to a resurgence in recent seasons, was taken aback by some of the pointed critiques, particularly regarding what McHale saw as a growing “overemphasis on flair over grit.”
Speaking briefly to reporters following the report’s release, McRae said, “It’s a shock, no doubt. Jock McHale is the foundation of this club’s legacy. We respect everything he built, and we’ll take time to reflect on how we continue to honor that moving forward.”
The timing of the report’s release comes as Collingwood battles for top position in the AFL ladder, adding another layer of pressure as they look to stay focused amid off-field distractions.
Club officials have since announced plans to hold a special ceremony later this year to formally honor McHale’s enduring impact and reaffirm Collingwood’s commitment to its proud traditions.
