After Dan Campbell won the 2024 NFL Coach of the Year award, former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia unexpectedly contacted Campbell. Patricia wrote a handwritten note thanking Campbell on his amazing season and the Lions franchise’s transition, according to people familiar with the matter.
According to reports, the note said:
“Dan,
Congratulations on a fantastic season and a merited accolade. You’ve done something really unique with this crew. I hope you have more success in the future. You are a blessing to Detroit.
— Patricia Matt.
Given Patricia’s turbulent experience with the Lions from 2018 to 2020, which culminated with his firing, fans were taken aback by the gesture. Although many Detroiters still have conflicting opinions regarding Patricia’s tenure with the team, some thought this was a sophisticated move.
Since taking over in 2021, Campbell has guided the Lions to unprecedented success, including their first appearance in the NFC Championship in decades. Regarding Patricia’s note, Campbell merely grinned and replied, “Thank you.” Our only goal is to keep things moving forward.
Although some supporters are still dubious of Patricia’s motivations, others think this might be an indication of mutual respect between two coaches who have contributed to Detroit’s football history despite their differences.
