In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through the AFL community, Collingwood Football Club head coach Craig McRae has officially announced his departure from the club. The announcement comes as McRae accepts a new challenge, stepping into the role of head coach for the West Coast Eagles in a move few saw coming.

McRae, who led Collingwood to a premiership in 2023 and a consistent finals presence since taking over in 2022, made the announcement at a press conference this morning at the AIA Centre in Melbourne.

“This has been the hardest decision of my professional career,” McRae said. “I love this club, the players, the staff, and our fans. But the opportunity to lead the West Coast Eagles into a new era, to be part of their rebuild and growth, is something I felt strongly compelled to pursue.”

McRae’s departure marks the end of a transformative era for Collingwood. Under his leadership, the Magpies not only reclaimed their position as a powerhouse of the AFL but also became known for their aggressive, high-pressure style of play and unity on and off the field. His ability to connect with players and implement a modern football program earned him widespread respect across the league.

Collingwood President Jeff Browne paid tribute to McRae’s contribution.

“Fly has been more than a coach—he’s been a leader, a mentor, and a culture builder. While we are incredibly disappointed to see him go, we support his decision and thank him for everything he’s given to this football club.”

Meanwhile, West Coast Eagles confirmed the appointment shortly after McRae’s announcement, revealing that the club had been in talks with him for several weeks following the departure of former coach Adam Simpson earlier this season.

Eagles CEO Trevor Nisbett said the club was thrilled to welcome McRae.

“Craig brings with him a proven track record of success, innovation, and leadership. He’s exactly the person we believe can take the West Coast Eagles back to contention.”

The move comes as West Coast embarks on a major rebuild following several disappointing seasons and significant list changes. McRae is expected to bring his development-first coaching philosophy to a young squad brimming with potential but lacking consistent leadership in recent years.

The AFL community has reacted with surprise but also admiration for McRae’s bold decision.

As for Collingwood, the club has yet to announce who will step into the senior coaching role for the 2026 season, though speculation is already mounting about internal and external candidates.

For now, Craig McRae begins a new chapter—one that could reshape the trajectory of the West Coast Eagles and redefine his legacy in Australian Rules Football.
