In a monumental and emotional announcement that has sent shockwaves through the hockey world, the Colorado Avalanche have confirmed that franchise legend Peter Forsberg will officially return to the organization in 2025 as the Chief Hockey Officer (CHO).

The announcement was made earlier today by the Kroenke family, owners of the Avalanche, in a joint press conference alongside President Joe Sakic and General Manager Chris MacFarland. Forsberg’s appointment marks a historic homecoming for one of the most iconic figures in Avalanche history.

A Legend Returns

Peter Forsberg, the Hall of Fame forward and two-time Stanley Cup champion, was a cornerstone of Colorado’s success in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Known for his dazzling playmaking, physical two-way game, and clutch performances, Forsberg became the heart and soul of the Avalanche during their golden era.

“This is more than just a role,” said Forsberg, smiling during the press conference. “Colorado is home. The Avalanche are family. I’m honored to return and help lead this organization back to championship glory.”

What is a Chief Hockey Officer?

As Chief Hockey Officer, Forsberg will oversee all hockey operations — a role that puts him above the GM on the hockey hierarchy, and makes him a direct advisor to ownership. His responsibilities will include shaping the long-term vision of the team, mentoring staff and players, overseeing scouting and development strategies, and serving as a public-facing ambassador of Avalanche hockey culture.

The move is seen as a way to solidify leadership continuity as Joe Sakic gradually transitions to a more executive-level role within the Kroenke Sports empire. While Sakic remains President of Hockey Operations, Forsberg’s presence adds another layer of elite hockey intellect to the front office.

A Fan Favorite

The reaction from Avalanche fans has been euphoric. Forsberg jerseys are already flying off shelves at Ball Arena, and social media is abuzz with tributes to the Swedish superstar.

“This is like Gretzky returning to the Oilers,” said one longtime season ticket holder. “Foppa is the guy — he’s the reason so many of us fell in love with the Avalanche.”

Looking Ahead

The Avalanche, who have remained perennial contenders in recent years, are aiming to build another dynasty. Forsberg’s return signals a commitment to both excellence and legacy — blending the past with the present to shape the future of the franchise.

“He’s a competitor. A champion. A visionary,” said owner Stan Kroenke in a brief statement. “There’s no one better to help lead the Avalanche into the next era.”

Forsberg’s appointment officially begins in January 2025, but sources say he has already been involved in preliminary strategic meetings and prospect evaluations.

As the Avalanche skate toward another playoff push, one thing is certain: with Peter Forsberg back in the building, the heart of Colorado hockey beats stronger than ever.
