In a stunning and emotional development that has sent shockwaves through the AFL community, former Collingwood Football Club CEO Gary Pert has officially returned to the Magpies — this time as the club’s new General Manager (GM). The announcement came just moments after Pert touched down in Melbourne, greeted by a roaring crowd of black-and-white faithful.

The energy at the club’s headquarters in Olympic Park was electric as players, staff, and long-time supporters celebrated what many are calling a “homecoming of destiny.” Pert, who previously served as Collingwood’s CEO from 2007 to 2017, is credited with helping modernize the club’s operations and laying foundations that led to its strong competitive form in the early 2010s.

His return marks a new era of ambition for the club.

“We are overwhelmed with joy and excited beyond words to welcome Gary back,” said Collingwood FC Owner Barry Carp during a brief but impassioned media address. “His leadership, experience, and love for this club are exactly what we need as we look toward the next chapter. This isn’t just a hire — it’s a message to the entire league that Collingwood is doubling down on greatness.”

Carp went on to emphasize that Pert’s return aligns with the club’s long-term vision for sustainability, player development, and community engagement.

Insiders report that Pert will begin his new role immediately, working closely with head coach Craig McRae and current CEO Craig Kelly to ensure a seamless integration into the executive structure.

Speaking to media shortly after arrival, a visibly moved Gary Pert said:

“Collingwood has always been in my blood. I’m thrilled to return, and I’m here to serve — to the players, the staff, and especially the fans. Let’s make history again.”

With Collingwood already a serious contender in the AFL, Pert’s return could be the final piece of the puzzle as the club sets its sights on another premiership run.
