In a monumental and emotional announcement that has electrified the hockey world, the Colorado Avalanche have officially welcomed back Peter Forsberg, the franchise icon and Hall of Famer, as their new Chief Hockey Officer (CHO).
The news was confirmed today by the Stan Kroenke family, owners of the Avalanche, during a press conference at Ball Arena. Forsberg, a two-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the most electrifying players in NHL history, will assume his new executive role starting with the 2025-26 NHL season.
“Peter Forsberg is not only a legend in Colorado but a symbol of excellence, grit, and passion,” said Josh Kroenke. “We’re thrilled to have him lead the next chapter of Avalanche hockey both on and off the ice.”
Forsberg, known for his elite vision, physical play, and unmatched creativity, spent the majority of his illustrious career with the Avalanche, amassing over 850 points and helping lead the team to championships in 1996 and 2001. His No. 21 jersey was retired in 2011.
The new role of Chief Hockey Officer is expected to position Forsberg above the General Manager, giving him oversight of all hockey operations—from player development and scouting to major roster decisions. His return marks a symbolic and strategic shift for the organization, which has made clear its intention to rekindle the championship spirit of its golden years.
“This organization and city mean everything to me,” said Forsberg during the announcement. “I’m honored to return and help bring another Stanley Cup back to Colorado.”
Fans and former teammates have already taken to social media to celebrate the return of one of the game’s most beloved figures.
