monumental announcement that has rocked the hockey world, the Colorado Avalanche have confirmed that franchise legend Peter Forsberg will return to the organization in 2025, stepping into a new executive role as the Chief Hockey Officer (CHO).

The news was officially announced this morning by the Kroenke family, owners of the Colorado Avalanche, in a press release that called Forsberg’s return “a new era for the Avalanche — one that combines legacy, leadership, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.”

A Legacy Returns

Peter Forsberg, a Hall of Famer and one of the most dynamic players in NHL history, is widely considered one of the greatest to ever wear the Avalanche jersey. Known for his gritty play, surgical passing, and two-way brilliance, Forsberg was a cornerstone of the Avalanche’s Stanley Cup championships in 1996 and 2001.

After retiring from the NHL in 2011, Forsberg remained involved in various hockey and business ventures in his native Sweden. While he occasionally consulted with the Avalanche front office, this marks his first official return to the organization in a full-time leadership role.

The Role of Chief Hockey Officer

As Chief Hockey Officer, Forsberg will oversee all hockey operations, including:

  • Player development
  • Draft strategy and scouting
  • Coaching oversight
  • Organizational culture
  • Collaboration with the GM and coaching staff on roster decisions

Forsberg will work closely with General Manager Chris MacFarland, and will serve as a direct advisor to Owner Stan Kroenke, bringing his championship experience and elite hockey IQ into the heart of decision-making.

Forsberg Speaks

In a video message shared across Avalanche social media platforms, Forsberg said:

“This team and this city mean everything to me. I’ve bled for this sweater, and now I’m honored to help lead it into the future. We have a strong core, passionate fans, and the tools to compete for more Cups. I’m here to win.”

Fan and League Reaction

The announcement has been met with overwhelming excitement from Avalanche fans and alumni alike. Fellow Avs legend Joe Sakic, now President of Hockey Operations, called the move “perfectly timed and well deserved.”

Around the league, players and executives praised the decision, citing Forsberg’s fierce competitiveness and deep understanding of the modern game.

What’s Next?

Forsberg is expected to officially assume duties on October 1, 2025, ahead of the new NHL season. A formal press conference is scheduled for Monday, September 22, at Ball Arena.

Stay tuned for more coverage, exclusive interviews, and analysis as Peter Forsberg begins his next chapter — not on the ice, but at the helm of the Colorado Avalanche.
