BREAKING NEWS: Edmonton Oilers Head Coach Jay Woodcroft Resigns Minutes Ago Following NHL Controversy

In a stunning turn of events, Edmonton Oilers Head Coach Jay Woodcroft has officially tendered his resignation, sources close to the organization confirmed just minutes ago. The resignation comes amid growing tension within the franchise and follows a controversial stretch of games that sparked criticism from fans, analysts, and insiders across the National Hockey League (NHL).

Woodcroft, who had been at the helm since February 2022, reportedly submitted his resignation letter to Oilers General Manager Ken Holland early this afternoon. The decision, while unexpected, comes after a series of internal meetings held over the weekend, following the team’s inconsistent start to the 2025–26 season.

“It’s time for new leadership behind the bench,” a statement allegedly from Woodcroft read. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, but I believe stepping down is in the best interest of the players and the organization.”

This marks a dramatic shift for a team that had once again entered the season with Stanley Cup ambitions, led by superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The Oilers’ recent 4–1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on home ice—where the team was booed off the ice—appears to have been the final straw in a rapidly unraveling situation.

While no official press conference has yet been scheduled, Oilers brass are expected to make a public statement later this evening. Assistant Coach Glen Gulutzan is rumored to be stepping in as interim head coach, pending further decisions by team management.

The NHL has not commented on the situation, but speculation is swirling that Woodcroft’s departure could be linked to deeper off-ice issues or internal conflicts, although none have been publicly confirmed.
