In a heartfelt press conference this morning at Rogers Place, Knoblauch revealed that veteran right winger Zach Hyman will now take on a prestigious new role — Assistant Captain of the Edmonton Oilers for the upcoming NHL season.

“Zach embodies everything this organization stands for — leadership, work ethic, grit, and an unwavering commitment to the team,” said Knoblauch. “He’s earned this role both on and off the ice, and we’re proud to have him wear the ‘A’.”

The decision comes after a phenomenal season for Hyman, who recorded a career-high 44 goals and became a fan-favorite not just for his production, but for his relentless two-way play, leadership in the locker room, and community involvement throughout Edmonton.

Fans and Players React

The announcement was met with thunderous applause from fans on social media, with hashtags like #HymanAssistantCaptain and #OilersLeadership trending within hours.

Teammate Connor McDavid commented, “Zach’s one of the hardest working guys I’ve ever played with. He leads by example and brings the same intensity every single night. This is well deserved.”

Darnell Nurse, himself a leader on the team, added: “He’s one of the glue guys. The kind of teammate who lifts everyone around him. Couldn’t be happier for him.”

A Symbolic Shift

While the team has no shortage of star power, Knoblauch’s choice reflects a continued focus on culture, character, and balance — something fans see as crucial for another deep playoff run.

With Hyman officially stepping into a leadership role, expectations are even higher for the Oilers this season. If this is the tone they’re setting early, the rest of the league better take notice.
