In an unprecedented move, NHL President Luc Tardif imposed — and then swiftly withdrew — the largest fine in NHL history against four referees involved in the controversial matchup between the St. Louis Blues and the Florida Panthers last night.

The game, which ended in a 4-3 overtime victory for the Panthers, was marred by multiple officiating errors that critics and fans have called “egregious” and “game-altering.” Among the most notable incidents were:

A missed high-sticking call that led directly to Florida’s tying goal late in the third period.

An incorrect icing reversal that disrupted a potential scoring chance for St. Louis.

A controversial too-many-men non-call during the Panthers’ OT-winning play.

Sources inside the NHL say President Tardif initially levied a record-setting fine of $250,000 — divided among the four referees — citing “a gross failure to uphold the standards of officiating in a critical game with playoff implications.”

However, within hours of the announcement, the league released a follow-up statement indicating that the fine had been rescinded pending further internal review.

“While the initial decision reflected the severity of the officiating issues observed, the NHL is committed to due process,” said Tardif in the second statement. “We will conduct a thorough review, including input from the NHL Officials Association, before determining next steps.”

This dramatic reversal has sparked debate across the hockey world, with some applauding the accountability, while others warn it sets a dangerous precedent.

What’s Next?

The NHL has scheduled an emergency meeting with senior officiating leadership, and a formal investigation is now underway. It remains to be seen whether the fine will be reinstated or if disciplinary action will take a different form.

Fans of both the Blues and the Panthers have taken to social media to voice frustration and speculation, while players have remained mostly silent — though sources say several St. Louis players privately expressed “deep dissatisfaction” with the officiating.
