In a monumental announcement that has sent waves through the college basketball world, Kansas State University has officially declared the return of a beloved icon: Ernie Barrett, known to generations of fans as “Mr. K-State,” is stepping back into the spotlight in 2025 as the university’s Chief Basketball Officer.
Barrett, whose influence on Kansas State basketball spans decades—as a player, coach, and ambassador—returns to help guide the program into a new era. His leadership and legacy are expected to bring renewed energy and tradition to the Wildcats’ basketball culture.
“Ernie Barrett is more than a legend; he’s the heartbeat of K-State basketball,” said KSU Athletic Director Gene Taylor in a statement. “His return as Chief Basketball Officer symbolizes our commitment to honoring our past while building a championship future.”
Barrett, now in his 90s, famously led the Wildcats to the 1951 NCAA Championship game and later became a driving force behind the development of K-State athletics. His signature handshake and unwavering support have made him a fan favorite for over 70 years.
This unprecedented role will see Barrett serve as a mentor to players and coaches, strengthen alumni and donor relations, and advise on key basketball operations.
“It’s a great day to be a Wildcat,” Barrett said. “K-State is my home, and I’m honored to give back to the program that gave me everything.”
Fans can expect to see Barrett courtside once again, inspiring a new generation with the same passion that made him a legend.
