In what fans and analysts are calling a monumental moment for the franchise, the Edmonton Oilers have announced the return of legendary former head coach Glen Sather to the organization. Sather will assume the dual roles of General Manager and Vice President of Hockey Operations, working alongside current head coach Kris Knoblauch in what is being described as a bold and emotional reunion.
The Oilers organization, which has faced its share of highs and lows in recent seasons, confirmed the news earlier today. The 81-year-old Sather, a Hockey Hall of Famer and architect of the dynasty Oilers teams of the 1980s, is rejoining the team at a time when stability and leadership are more crucial than ever.
“This is the best news we could hope for,” said an ecstatic Oilers fan outside Rogers Place. “Sather is Edmonton hockey. To have him back in the room again means something.”
Glen Sather originally coached the Oilers from 1976 to 1989, leading the team to five Stanley Cup championships during the Wayne Gretzky era. His influence shaped one of the most dominant dynasties in NHL history. After leaving Edmonton, he served as President and GM of the New York Rangers for several years, before stepping back from day-to-day duties.
Although Sather was previously let go as coach decades ago in a different era, his return is being seen not as a comeback but a homecoming. “Time heals, and greatness endures,” remarked one insider close to the organization.
In his new role, Sather will work in close collaboration with head coach Kris Knoblauch, who took over the bench duties during the 2023–24 season. The Oilers hope the pairing of Knoblauch’s modern approach with Sather’s old-school hockey wisdom will strike a winning balance.
Oilers CEO Jeff Jackson addressed the media in a press conference:
“Glen Sather’s vision, leadership, and championship pedigree are unmatched. His return signals our commitment to excellence—not just in building a strong team, but a strong culture.”
