In a move that’s sending shockwaves through the hockey world, the Edmonton Oilers have officially signed Tristan Gretzky, son of NHL icon Wayne Gretzky, to a Professional Tryout (PTO) contract ahead of the 2025-26 season.

The announcement was made early Thursday morning by the Oilers front office, confirming weeks of speculation about a potential Gretzky family reunion with the franchise where Wayne cemented his legacy as “The Great One.”

Tristan, 23, has followed a unique path into professional hockey. While he played at the junior and collegiate level in the United States, he initially pursued golf before fully committing to hockey in his early twenties. Despite not being selected in the NHL Entry Draft, Gretzky has impressed scouts in recent years with his improved skating, hockey IQ, and playmaking ability.

Oilers General Manager Ken Holland addressed the media following the announcement:

“We understand the weight that comes with the Gretzky name, especially here in Edmonton. But Tristan has earned this opportunity. This is a professional tryout—he’ll have to prove himself like anyone else. We’re excited to see what he brings to camp.”

While some fans are quick to draw comparisons to his father, the organization emphasized that Tristan is carving out his own identity on the ice.

Standing at 6’1″ and weighing 185 lbs, Tristan plays left wing and is known for his quick hands and strong offensive instincts. Though he has big skates to fill, he’s shown flashes of creativity and composure reminiscent of his father’s legendary playmaking style.

Wayne Gretzky, who spent nine seasons with the Oilers and led the team to four Stanley Cup championships, expressed both pride and caution.

“I’m incredibly proud of Tristan. But I’ve always told him—this is his journey. The Oilers gave me a home and a platform to do what I love. Now it’s his turn to earn his place,” Wayne said in a statement.

Tristan will report to Oilers training camp later this month. If he performs well, he could earn a spot on the team’s opening-night roster or potentially be signed to a two-way contract to develop further in the AHL.

The buzz surrounding his PTO adds another layer of excitement to an already high-stakes season for the Oilers, who are aiming to contend for the Stanley Cup after last year’s deep playoff run.

Regardless of the outcome, one thing is certain: the Gretzky name is back in Edmonton—and the hockey world will be watching closely.
