In a stunning act of generosity that has captured the hearts of fans across the nation, Phoenix Suns head coach Jordan Ott announced he is donating the entirety of his $50 million sponsorship earnings to combat homelessness in the Suns’ metro area.

The funds will be directed toward the creation of a new long-term housing and emergency shelter facility, which will include 150 permanent housing units and 300 emergency shelter beds. The project, in partnership with local nonprofit housing developers and the city of Phoenix, is expected to break ground later this year.

“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up,” Ott said during an emotional press conference Friday afternoon. “And I knew if I ever had the means, I’d give back in a meaningful way. No one deserves to sleep on a sidewalk.”

Ott, who grew up in a working-class family in the Midwest, has often spoken about the challenges he faced as a young man, including periods of housing insecurity. His rise through the NBA coaching ranks — from assistant coach to head coach of the Suns — has been marked by not only strategic excellence on the court, but also a deep commitment to community and social justice initiatives.

According to the city’s Department of Housing and Urban Development, Phoenix has seen a sharp rise in homelessness over the past five years, with a growing number of families, veterans, and youth affected. Officials estimate the donation will cut unsheltered homelessness in the area by nearly 25% once the facility is operational.

“This is not just a donation,” said Mayor Carla Ruiz. “This is a statement. Coach Ott is leading with compassion, vision, and humanity. He’s showing us what real leadership looks like — not just on the court, but off it too.”

The new facility, which is tentatively being called The Ott Center for Dignity and Housing, will provide not only beds and housing, but also wraparound services including mental health support, job placement programs, addiction counseling, and youth outreach.

Ott made it clear that this is not a one-time gesture, but part of a broader mission.

“I don’t just want to win games. I want to win for this city,” he said. “If we can help people find safety, stability, and hope — that’s a legacy worth more than any trophy.”

Players from the Suns organization have already voiced their support, with star guard Devin Booker tweeting: “Coach Ott just changed the game. Proud to play for a man like this.”

With the NBA season just around the corner, Jordan Ott’s bold move off the court has already secured him a championship in the hearts of many — proving that sometimes, the biggest wins happen far from the spotlight.
