ESPN CONFIRMED: Warriors Legend Stephen Curry Terminates Contract Early — Here’s Why

In a stunning and unexpected move, ESPN has confirmed that Stephen Curry, the legendary point guard of the Golden State Warriors, has officially terminated his contract with the team — nearly one full season before its scheduled end in 2026.

Curry, 37, who is widely considered the greatest shooter in NBA history and one of the most iconic players of his generation, was under contract through the 2025–26 NBA season. However, multiple sources close to the situation revealed on Monday that Curry informed Warriors management of his decision over the weekend, catching many in the organization off-guard.

The Reason Behind the Shocking Decision

According to league insiders, Curry’s decision stems from a combination of personal and professional factors. While no formal press conference has yet been held, a source close to the star confirmed to ESPN that the four-time NBA champion is stepping away to “focus on family, business ventures, and legacy projects that go beyond basketball.”

“This wasn’t about money or team issues. Steph has been thinking deeply about life after basketball,” the source said. “He didn’t want a farewell tour. He wanted to leave the game on his own terms — while still playing at a high level.”

This marks the end of an era for Golden State, as Curry has spent his entire 16-year career with the franchise, leading them to four NBA titles, winning two league MVPs, and changing the way the game is played with his revolutionary shooting.

Warriors React

The Golden State Warriors organization released a brief statement:

“We respect Stephen’s decision and are grateful beyond words for his historic contributions to our franchise and to the game of basketball. He will always be a Warrior.”

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and longtime teammate Draymond Green were reportedly “emotional” when told of the decision but supportive of Curry’s desire to walk away on his own terms.

What’s Next for Curry?

Curry is expected to focus on his production company, Unanimous Media, as well as philanthropic efforts, youth sports programs, and possibly even a role in future NBA operations. Rumors are already swirling about a potential role with Team USA or even ownership opportunities.

Curry has yet to issue a personal statement but is expected to speak later this week.
