In a shocking turn of events, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones has made a stunning announcement that has rocked the NFL world and left Colts head coach Shane Steichen visibly stunned.

During an impromptu press conference at the Colts’ training facility this afternoon, Jones announced that he is stepping away from football indefinitely, citing personal reasons and a desire to focus on his long-term health and well-being.

“This has been the toughest decision of my life,” Jones said, holding back emotion. “But after long conversations with my family, medical professionals, and the Colts organization, I’ve decided it’s time for me to take a step back from the game I love.”

The announcement comes just weeks before the start of the 2025 NFL regular season, and after a highly publicized trade that brought Jones to Indianapolis earlier this year in a move many thought would solidify the team’s quarterback situation.

Head coach Shane Steichen, who was expected to address the media following practice, was reportedly “blindsided” by the timing and nature of the announcement.

“I’m speechless,” Steichen said moments later. “Daniel’s health and happiness come first, but from a football standpoint, this changes everything.”

Jones, 28, had been expected to lead the Colts into a promising new chapter following a rocky tenure with the New York Giants. Questions now swirl around who will take over the starting QB role, with rookie standout Treyson Ward and veteran backup Gardner Minshew emerging as possible options.

What’s Next?

The Colts front office has yet to comment on whether they will seek another quarterback through free agency or trade. Meanwhile, speculation is running rampant on whether Jones’ decision is a temporary hiatus or a permanent retirement.
