In an unexpected blow to the Cleveland Guardians’ outfield depth, Lane Thomas exited Friday night’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers in the sixth inning due to mild plantar fascia symptoms in his right foot, the team confirmed shortly after the game.
Thomas, who has been a key contributor in the Guardians’ lineup since joining the team earlier this season, appeared to be in discomfort following a sprint to track down a fly ball in right field. He was seen speaking with trainers between innings before being pulled for precautionary reasons.
“Lane felt some tightness and soreness in his foot, and given how important he is to our team long-term, we didn’t want to take any chances,” said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt during the postgame press conference. “We’re hopeful it’s nothing serious, but he’ll be re-evaluated tomorrow morning.”
Before leaving the game, Thomas was 1-for-3 at the plate, continuing a solid stretch of production that has helped keep the Guardians in the AL Central race. Since the All-Star break, he’s batted .290 with 4 home runs and 11 RBIs, proving to be a spark both offensively and defensively.
Plantar fascia issues—often marked by inflammation or strain in the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot—can vary widely in severity. While Thomas’ symptoms were described as “mild,” the Guardians medical staff will likely monitor him closely over the coming days to avoid aggravating the condition.
The team has not yet ruled him out for the remainder of the weekend series against Detroit, but a short-term rest period seems likely.
Fans and teammates alike are hoping for a swift recovery.
“We need him out there, no doubt,” said Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor. “But his health comes first. He’s a warrior, and I know he’ll bounce back.”
