A wave of emotion and pride has swept through the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars football community as legendary football figure Brian Billick, former Super Bowl-winning head coach and longtime commentator, has officially returned to his roots. The university has appointed Billick as Senior Coaching Advisor for the Cougars’ football program — a move that fans, alumni, and players are calling “a dream come true.”

“It’s not just a return home — it’s a full-circle moment,” said BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe. “Brian’s experience, strategic mind, and deep love for this university will elevate our football program to new heights.”

A Homecoming Decades in the Making

Billick, a BYU alumnus, played tight end for the Cougars in the mid-1970s before going on to carve out a legendary coaching career that included leading the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl XXXV victory in 2001. Known for his offensive expertise and leadership, Billick became one of the most respected minds in the NFL.

After retiring from coaching, he spent over a decade as a television analyst and football commentator, providing insight on networks like NFL Network and FOX Sports.

Now, Billick returns to the campus where it all began — not for the bright lights of the pros, but for a new mission: to mentor young athletes and support the development of BYU football as it continues to grow in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

“BYU shaped me into the man and coach I became,” Billick said during the official press announcement. “I’ve always said if the opportunity ever came to give back to this program in a meaningful way, I’d take it. That day is here.”

What His Role Will Involve

As Senior Coaching Advisor, Billick will not be directly coaching on the sidelines, but he will:

  • Serve as a mentor to the current coaching staff and head coach Kalani Sitake

  • Assist in long-term strategic planning for recruiting, offensive and defensive schemes

  • Provide weekly game analysis and leadership seminars for players

  • Act as a liaison between alumni, boosters, and the university’s athletic board

  • Spearhead leadership development and professional preparation programs for student-athletes

Coach Kalani Sitake, who has led BYU through its recent transition to the SEC, expressed his excitement and gratitude:

“Brian is a Cougar legend. Having his insight, mentorship, and experience around this program is going to sharpen everyone — from players to staff.”

A Roaring Reception from Fans and Alumni

The announcement has electrified Cougar Nation, with fans celebrating on social media and former players voicing their support.

  • “Coach Billick coming back to Provo? That’s a championship move.”

  • “This is the best news we could hope for. The man knows how to win and inspire.”

  • “He’s bringing that Super Bowl mentality to Cougar football.”

Local news outlets report that ticket demand for the upcoming season has already surged since the announcement, and the university store saw a major spike in BYU-Billick branded merchandise within hours.

What This Means for the Program

BYU’s move to bring in Brian Billick as a senior advisor sends a clear message: the Cougars are serious about becoming a perennial powerhouse in college football.

With the expanded College Football Playoff and the increased competition in the SEC, the program is making strategic investments in leadership, resources, and culture. Billick’s presence is expected to not only elevate on-field performance but also attract top-tier recruits who want to be mentored by one of the greatest minds in football.

“This isn’t about reliving the past,” Billick emphasized. “It’s about helping BYU build the future — a future where this program competes with the very best, and wins.”
