Historic Moment for Inclusion: Italy’s Valentina Petrillo Set to Become First Openly Transgender Athlete at Paralympics

In a groundbreaking moment for LGBTQ+ representation in sports, Italian athlete Valentina Petrillo is poised to make history as the first openly transgender athlete to compete at the Paralympics.

Petrillo, a 28-year-old para-canoeist, will represent Italy at the upcoming Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Born male, Petrillo began her transition in 2017 and has since become an advocate for transgender inclusion in sports.

“I want to show the world that being transgender doesn’t mean you can’t achieve your dreams,” Petrillo said in a recent interview. “I hope to inspire others to be their authentic selves and pursue their passions without fear.”

Petrillo’s journey to the Paralympics has not been without challenges. She faced initial skepticism and resistance from some within the sports community, but has since received widespread support and recognition.

“Valentina’s participation in the Paralympics is a testament to her determination and courage,” said International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons. “We are proud to have her as part of the Paralympic family and look forward to seeing her compete in Tokyo.”

Petrillo’s historic participation marks a significant milestone for transgender inclusion in sports, paving the way for others to follow in her footsteps.

“It’s a momentous occasion for the LGBTQ+ community and a major step forward for inclusivity in sports,” said LGBTQ+ advocate and Olympic medalist, Gus Kenworthy.

As Petrillo prepares to make her Paralympic debut, she remains focused on her performance and the opportunity to inspire others. “I’m ready to give it my all and make Italy proud,” she said.
