John Marino, a former defenseman for the New Jersey Devils, recently discussed his unexpected trade to the Utah Hockey Club, sharing his initial shock and worry about the decision. In a conversation, Marino expressed his opinions:
“Trade speculations, draft rumors, and other rumors abounded in the run-up to the draft. Really, you never know until it does. It was difficult not to consider the possibilities even though I was trying to concentrate on my training and getting ready for the upcoming season.”
Marino went on, “I wasn’t really sure where I was heading because there were a few other clubs in the mix as well, and I felt like Utah wasn’t talked about too much. Although I had heard some whispers, nothing specific. I was surprised when I got the call. To be honest, it was shocking.”
On June 29, the Devils dealt Marino to the Utah Hockey Club for the number 49 pick in 2024 and a second-round selection in the 2025 NHL round, coupled with the 153rd pick in the same round. After playing for the Devils for the previous three seasons, Marino saw a major shift with the trade.
