Golf Today anchor Eamonn Lynch discussed fresh charges from Las Vegas gambler Billy Walters, who alleges Mickelson attempted to bet on his 2012 Ryder Cup team. Although “Southpaw” denied betting on golf’s major tournament, suspicions circulated about Mickelson’s betting practices. Wadokins appears to be a huge fan of Phil Michelson. Golf veterans did not discuss Mikelson’s activities on and off the course. Wadkins made it obvious to Lynch how he felt about LIV Golfer and his activities throughout the years.
What did Wadkins say about Mickelson? When asked about the gambling claims, Wadkins, the 1977 PGA Championship winner, told Lynch just how he felt about “Southpaw.”
“I don’t think there has ever been a more disappointed individual in golf than Phil Mickelson,” he remarked. “He’s been a popular player for a long time, and we were all impressed with how he performed. But nothing he’s been doing lately appears healthy.”
Wadkins was referring to Mickelson’s choice to leave the PGA Tour and join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour, as well as his gambling troubles. “He missed the opportunity to skipper the Ryder Cup,” Watkins remarked. “I believe he would have become captain twice. Now he will not be a part of this. It is a pity. It burst on its own. He appears to be doing it every step of the way. It is unfortunate and sad. It’s unfortunate that certain people in our game believe they are greater than the game itself. And obviously Phil believes he is more than that.”
Now they must sit and wait for Mickelson to respond to Wadkins. “The Lefty” has been very upfront about his intention to leave the PGA, and he has not denied betting substantially on sporting events throughout the years. It will be interesting to see how Mickelson and the golfing community react to Wadkins’ criticisms. Mickelson endured a difficult week on and off the course.
