BREAKING NEWS: Shane Beamer updates Gamecocks quarterback competition after the first scrimmage.

Shane Beamer arrived at his weekly Tuesday press conference, as usual, eager to discuss the conclusion of South Carolina’s ninth spring practice of the year and what happened last Saturday. One scrimmage down, two to go. Here are some of the gamecocks’ football coach’s takeaways from the first spring scrimmage.

According to Beamer, there were perhaps 60 plays of “scrimmage work” in which the Gamecock quarterbacks were live. That accounted for approximately a third of Saturday’s scrimmage. Everything else was 7-on-7 play without tackling to emphasize the passing game. Once again, Beamer stated that he has not observed much separation among the quarterbacks.   He was impressed by redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers’ throws and Auburn transfer Robby Ashford’s pocket presence. Beamer enjoyed a couple moments from true freshman early enrollee Dante Reno at last Thursday’s practice and Saturday’s scrimmage as well. Beamer noted that, while confronting quarterbacks in the spring can be intimidating, he made certain that the room did not become very comfortable sitting in the pocket. “I don’t like them to, but they need to just understand they can’t sit back in the pocket all day and not get hit at this level,” Beamer was quoted as saying. “They gotta understand when they have to get rid of the ball and when they’re protected or not.”
